Ornate Statement Choker Necklace, Copper Wire Wrap & Woven Seed Beads, Blue Purple, Art to Wear by Elksong Jewelry
An oxidized copper wire wrap & gorgeous boulder opal focal with woven blue & purple seed bead neck piece make this ornate necklace truly art to wear!
So much exquisite detail, starting with a focal that enfolds a cabochon of gloriously colored boulder opal in a complex setting of coiling, twisting oxidized copper wire wrap, at once symmetrical & abstract, with an almost "living" feel. Boulder opal from Australia is found embedded in large boulders of ironstone, which is how it earned its name. Occurring as pebble rock, precious opal develops within thin veins, fissures and hollows. As opal miners attempt to remove the embedded opal from the ironstone, some of the host matrix is preserved during the process. For this reason, boulder opal is sometimes referred to as 'opal in matrix'. The ironstone matrix enhances the stones durability and vibrancy of color, often increasing the desirable effects of 'play of color' and 'opalescence'.
The necklace is created with two separate sections of "helix spiral" woven bead work, using a core color of brownish, muddy purple with a spine of mixed etched & iridescent electric blue glass seed beads, that echo the color in the gem cabochon. The beading is woven around lengths of heavy duty cotton cord, very durable. At both ends of the beaded sections are ornate, solid copper beads & the piece closes with a detailed solid copper toggle clasp.
Pure bohemian decadence!
This choker length necklace measures 17" (43.18 cm) in total length, including the toggle clasp. The focal measures about 2.5" (6.35 cm) in length, including it's bail x 1.75" (4.44 cm) in width. The necklace wears best as a short "choker" length, but if you need to add some length to it for a comfortable fit, please contact us, we'd be happy to customize.
Oxidized copper will continue to darken and/or change color with age & wear. This piece's focal can be carefully polished with a jewelry polishing cloth, or even flannel or chamois cloth, holding it firmly & supporting a small section of wire wrap in a firm grip while gently polishing.
